Thank you cupcakes

Last week was my elder son's last day at school - only returning to sit his A Level exams.  I made these thank you cupcakes for him to take in - 3 subjects; 2 teachers per subject; plus one for his head of year and one for the head teacher.  Rosettes for the Government & Politics teachers; calculators for the Maths teachers; USB sticks for the Computer Science teachers; and a mortar board for the head teacher.  Lemon cupcakes with lemon curd buttercream and chocolate cupcakes with chocolate caramel flavour buttercream.

I also made these cupcakes for a very special member of staff.  Louise has been with my son throughout his entire education. At primary school, she was the LSA for a boy in his class, from nursery right up until he left. And then, when Matthew left primary school to go to the shiny brand new secondary school (because his was the first year it opened...!) Louise also left to take up the role of Student Manager (I think that was her title!) at his new school! So think - she's known my son only 3 years less than I have! LOL!! Louise is a very special lady and I'm probably more grateful to her that she realises.  I've asked, but apparently she isn't looking for a new role in a university somewhere...

Wedding Cake 'Maryam' - in pink

Well....  first of all you've never done a particular design before and then two come along at once! LOL!!
Wedding Cake 'Maryam' - which I only did for the first time a few weeks ago - but this time with pink roses and ribbon, not peach.  I couldn't decide which photo I liked the best - so I've uploaded all of them.  First of all, there's the black background that most of the cakes on my site have.  Then there's the shot of the cake at the venue, and I really do think the blue complements the cake very well.  There's something about the long shot of the cake that I love - but the incredibly high ceilings and fantastically tall windows make the cake look tiny and almost a bit lost.  In fact, one comment is that it looks like a little cake on the floor in front of a door!   And finally, the last shot is with a 'filter'.  It' just slightly enriches the blueness of the wallpaper.
Which is your favourite?

70th birthday cookies

First off, I must thank 'SweetAmbs' for her wonderful video tutorials.  I'm a HUGE fan of her work, which is simply exquisite.  One of the 'how to' videos is a technique using royal icing to make this delicate rose pattern.  I'd been wanting to try it for a while and so when I had a request for 'cookies in the shape of 70, in pink and white' I knew it was just the opportunity I'd been waiting for.  I am so delighted with how these turned out...  it just reminds me of delicate china or porcelain.

Going Back To My Roots....

When I first started seriously thinking about cakes, I thought I would do children's cake decorating parties.  However, I quickly discovered that I was getting more and more 'proper' cake orders and very few of the parties...  so I had a quick re-think and decided that, actually, cake making was the choice for me.

However, it was my niece's 8th birthday 2 weeks ago and she REALLY wanted a cake decorating party...  so out came the aprons, rolling pins and cutters and a cake decorating party she had!

The girls all had a wonderful time and if I'm honest, some of their creations FAR exceeded my expectations!  Perhaps I have some assistants-in-training for the future?

The Birthday Girl, Sarah

My other niece, Mia...  obviously taking quality control very seriously!

Millie confused icing sugar with face powder, I think!

This is how you do it.....

Wedding Cake 'Tamara'

Wedding Cake 'Tamara'
Warmest congratulations to Tamara and Simon who were married today at the picturesque Layer Marney Tower near Colchester.  When I asked about the history of the building, a member of staff told me that it dates back to 1513 and that Henry VIII had stayed there!
Tamara & Simon's wedding cake was two tiers of Baileys sponge and a tier of chocolate sponge, all covered in home-made white chocolate paste and finished with milk chocolate roses.  The toppers were supplied by Tamara & Simon!

Wedding Cake 'Anoushka'

Wedding Cake 'Anoushka'
The bride brought me a small sample of ribbon, to show me her colour scheme.  I must thank the  www.theribbonshop.co.uk from whom I received the most wonderful service.  Clara kindly sent me several samples so I could find the right colour match.  And this US single faced satin ribbon in azalea was just thing!!  I must also thank www.sunflower-sugarart.co.uk for sending me out the magenta petal dust so very quickly!
So, whether you call this colour azalea, magenta, fuschia or cerise, it's certainly striking!
I've actually made an almost identical cake to this in the past, but by having a much darker pink ribbon/roses, it gives it a completely different feel!  They're so different! (see http://www.patacake-parties.com/Wedding/files/page3-1028-full.html )
4 tier wedding cake, blocked with hand-made sugar roses and piped detail.
Congratulations to Anoushka and Richard!

Wedding Cake 'Sandra'

Wedding Cake 'Sandra'
Extended height (5") tiers of vanilla sponge cake with jam and buttercream, covered with marzipan and sugarpaste.  The bottom and third tiers were embossed with a diamond pattern, with a silver dragee applied to each intersection.  Hand-cut monograms to exactly match the couple's wedding invitation decorate the 2nd tier and the top tier is topped with sugar roses and hand-made beaded wire.  A delicate, lacy sugar butterfly was added to the top tier once at the reception venue.  The bottom tier alone weighed over 8gk!!  The wedding cake had to be assembled at the venue as there was no way we were able to lift it!
Congratulations to Sandra and Derek!

England Rugby Rose Bar-Mitzvah Cake

England Rugby Rose Bar Mitzvah Cake
The customer and I decided not to go down the rugby ball route for various reasons... So I suggested this, which is based on the invitation (which was a rectangle, edged in red with the rose in the background, faded a bit, with the invitation wording over it). The rose is all hand cut, piece by piece from sugarpaste. 10 x 8 vanilla sponge with jam and buttercream, covered with marzipan and sugarpaste on a 16 x 14 drum.
